What to Expect: A Simple Guide to Funeral Costs

Introduction

At one of life’s hardest moments, planning a funeral can feel overwhelming. We’re here to offer honest, clear guidance about the costs involved.  Funeral costs vary based on your choices — burial, cremation, or type of service.

Some charges cover our services; others come from third parties like cemeteries or clergy.  Our role is to guide you gently and help you stay within your budget with dignity.

Unattended Cremation – £1495.00

An unattended funeral is a simple and private option for families who prefer not to have a traditional service with mourners present. It includes all the essential elements — dignified care of your loved one, transportation to Antrim and Newtownabbey Crematorium (or another suitable location), and completion of all necessary paperwork — without a public ceremony. Some families choose this option for personal, financial, or practical reasons, and it still allows space for remembrance in your own time and way. Though no one attends on the day, your loved one is never alone, and we carry out every part of the process with the same care, dignity, and respect as any other funeral.

Unattended Burial – POA

An unattended burial is a quiet, respectful option for families who do not wish to hold a public funeral service. It includes the dignified care of your loved one, transport to the cemetery, and all necessary arrangements carried out without mourners present. This option allows for private remembrance at a time that suits you.

Please note: Prices vary depending on the cemetery and whether a new grave is required, which is why this service is listed as Price On Application (POA). We will provide a clear, tailored quote once details are confirmed.

Funeral Payments, Plans & Financial Support

We believe every family should have the chance to honour their loved one with dignity, regardless of financial circumstance. Below is a guide to the payment options and planning services we offer to help ease the financial burden:

Pre-Planned and Pre-Arranged Funerals

Planning ahead gives you peace of mind and ensures your wishes are clearly recorded. A pre-arranged funeral allows you to make decisions about the type of service you want, the location, and any personal preferences — without needing to pay in advance.

A pre-paid funeral plan allows you to fix the cost of your funeral at today’s prices, protecting your family from rising expenses in the future. Payment can be made in a lump sum or by instalments, and we’ll guide you through every option, step by step.

Benefits:

  • Reduces stress for your family

  • Freezes costs at today’s rates

  • Gives you control over your final wishes

We work with trusted funeral planning providers regulated for your peace of mind.

Funeral Finance

If a funeral is needed unexpectedly, and finances are tight, we offer access to flexible funeral finance options through our partners. This allows you to spread the cost over manageable monthly payments, subject to affordability and approval.

Key points:

  • Quick and confidential application

  • Fixed, fair interest rates

  • No upfront payment required in most cases

We’ll explain the process fully and help you apply if this option is right for you.

Credit Union Death Benefit Insurance (Northern Ireland)

Many Credit Unions across Northern Ireland offer a Death Benefit Insurance (DBI) policy, which pays a fixed amount (often around £2,000) towards funeral costs upon death. This benefit is available to eligible members and is a valuable support during difficult times.

To check if you’re covered:

  • Contact your local Credit Union branch

  • Ask about DBI eligibility and payout terms

  • Provide us with the member details — we can assist with claims

  • We are familiar with working with Credit Unions throughout Antrim, Ballymena, Belfast, and wider Northern Ireland, and can manage the claim process directly with them on your behalf.

Government Funeral Support

In some cases, financial help from the government may be available to assist with funeral costs — especially if the person responsible for arranging the funeral is on certain benefits.

Funeral Expenses Payment (Northern Ireland)

This is a Department for Communities payment that may help cover necessary costs such as:

  • Burial or cremation fees

  • Transport for the deceased (up to 50 miles)

  • Some of the funeral director’s charges

  • Coffin and flowers

  • Travel to and from the funeral

To qualify, the person applying must:

  • Be responsible for arranging the funeral

  • Be on a qualifying benefit (e.g., Universal Credit, Income Support, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit)

  • Meet relationship criteria (close relative, partner, or close friend)

Please note: the payment is made to help cover essential costs only, and it may not cover the full amount.

How We Can Help:

We can provide an itemised invoice and any supporting paperwork needed to apply for the Funeral Expenses Payment. While the application is being processed, we can work with you on a manageable plan to ensure your loved one’s funeral can still go ahead.

Repatriation & The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust

When a death occurs abroad or outside Northern Ireland, bringing your loved one home is known as repatriation. It can be a complex and emotional process, involving legal paperwork, transport arrangements, and communication with foreign authorities. Our team is experienced in managing every detail of repatriation with care, dignity, and professionalism.

We can assist with:

  • Liaising with embassies, airlines, and local authorities

  • Securing the necessary documentation (including death certificates and permits)

  • Preparing and transporting your loved one safely back home

  • Coordinating with overseas funeral directors

The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust (KBRT) is a Northern Ireland-based charity that helps families bring home loved ones who have died suddenly or tragically abroad. The trust offers financial assistance and emotional support to ease the burden of repatriation.

If your loved one has died abroad and you need help:

  • Contact KBRT directly or let us assist with the referral

  • The trust often responds quickly and with great compassion

  • Funding decisions are made on a case-by-case basis

We work closely with KBRT and are proud to support their mission. If repatriation is required, we’ll handle every detail and coordinate with the Trust to ensure your family receives the help and support you deserve.

Terms of Business

In line with the CMA Funeral Market Order 2021, we provide a full price list and written estimate upon request. Payment for unattended funerals is due in full at booking; for all other services, payment terms are agreed in advance, with balances due within 30 days. Late payments may incur interest and recovery costs. Third-party fees (e.g. cremation, burial, clergy) are not included unless stated and may require upfront payment. If cancelled, charges may apply for work done or third-party costs. Personal data is used only for funeral arrangements.

Funeral arrangements can be made in the comfort of your own home or at one of our funeral homes — whichever feels right for you and your family.

It's not wrong or disrespectful to think about the Funeral Costs.
